Curriculum and Daily Work
2nd graders will have English Language Arts two days per week for 45 minutes each class period. Sra. Puchol and Sra. Martinson's classes will have English on Mondays and Wednesdays and Sra. Lopez and Sra. Riddle's classes will have English on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 3rd graders have English Language Arts for 45 minutes four days a week, Monday through Thursday.
The Daily 5 Approach:
Students will be using the Daily 5 approach to literacy this year in English Language Arts and in their Spanish literacy instruction. With this method of instruction, students work with books at their reading level and rotate between five literacy activities while the teacher works one-on-one with students or with small groups. The components of the Daily 5 consist of reading to self, partner reading, working on words, working on writing, and listening to reading.
2nd grade will spend two days a week working on writing, listening to reading, reading to self and partner reading and one day every other week on word work (spelling). 3rd graders will work on writing, listening to reading and read to self daily and will spend every Thursday working on spelling.

Words Their Way Spelling:
Words Their Way will be used again for spelling this year which focuses on phonetic spelling patterns. Flash cards will be sent home weekly on a pink, yellow or green sheet. They will need to be cut apart and used to practice sorting word patterns at home. On the back of the reading log you will find the spelling homework sheet, which is a study guide with practice activities to complete.
Spelling tests will begin in October and will be every other week for 2nd graders on Wednesday (Puchol and Martinson) or Thursdays (Lopez and Riddle).
Spelling tests will be every Thursday for 3rd graders. Spelling will start early October after all students have been assessed.
